iPowerline Frequently Asked Questions Q. How does the technology work? A. A digital signal is effectively 'injected' into the electricity circuit of a building and distributed to every single mains plug within the premises. Q. How much does the technology cost? A. As red's solutions are tailored to specific individual criteria and needs, costs depend on the number and type of equipment which is networked together. Q. Is this new technology reliable? A. Alongside cabling (which is a far more expensive option) red's solution offers the most reliable distribution of digital signals. As it transmits data down the electricity network, there is no down-time or loss of signal experienced - as with wireless. It is also 20 times faster in transmitting the data, resulting in a much higher quality of transmission. Q. Does the system work with WiFi? A. Yes, in fact, the unique technology of the distribution system strengthens the wireless signal in areas of weakness. This allows you to integrate wireless access points in areas of the house where you want to benefit from having that greater mobility - ideal for use in old or large houses. Q. How secure is the connection through the PLC? A. As the signal transmission relies primarily on the electricity network within a building rather than a radio wave signal which can be intercepted externally, all data transmission is completely secure. Our system uses 128 bit AES encryption (developed and used by the US Government Department), making it a very secure solution. Q. Our cables are really old - will they be able to handle the data flow. A. In our experience, as long as the cables are safe, then the older the cables the better as they tend to have more copper and therefore conduct the signal better.
